Athlete Eligibility

Eligibility

SCS recognizes that all students are created in the image of God and that each is created unique in in their gifts and abilities. At all levels of play the purpose of the athletics program at Santiago Christian School remains the same. We want to use the gifts that God has given us to bring praise and glory to Him. However, athletics is in addition to the academic program of SCS and a student must remain committed to achieving their best in academics as well. All student athletes at Santiago Christian School must be exemplary members of the student body. Therefore, minimum standards of academic achievement have been adopted in order for student athletes to establish and maintain eligibility.

Academics

To be academically eligible, student athletes must:

  • Work hard in the classroom and complete homework consistently and on-time.

  • Be committed to giving their best effort in order to be passing all courses.

Academically ineligible means that a student is not able to play in any games, but may be allowed to continue practicing with the team.

If a student is failing in their course work, the following guidelines will be followed:

  1. One course – the student will be given a warning and 2 weeks to improve the grade. After two weeks, if the grade has not improved, the student will become academically ineligible.

  2. More than one course – the student will be become academically ineligible and an improvement plan will be created with the Principal, Guidance Counselor, and/or Coach. The improvement plan may require outside tutoring or support.

A student will remain academically ineligible until all grades have improved.

If there is no improvement, the student may be removed from all practices in addition to being removed from games.

Principal’s discretion may be given to student athletes. For example, considerations may be given due to identified learning needs for which the student is receiving support for or may be given for other circumstances that are worthy of consideration. This discretion recognizes that all students and their situations are unique.

Teachers are required to ensure that all grades are accurate in PowerSchool by Monday morning.

The Athletic Director will inform coaches and principals of athletes who are failing a course(s) every Monday afternoon.

Conduct

Each student athlete is expected to adhere to the rules and regulations at Santiago Christian School. Violation of those rules may result in missed games, practice time, or expulsion from the team. The severity of the action and prior behaviors will be taken into account.

Participation fees are essential to help fund the cost of interscholastic athletics; transportation to athletic events, game officials, tournament entry fees, equipment, and supplies.

  • Every student who desires to participate in an after school sport must an athletic fee.

  • A student may participate in more than one sport. This student must pay ONE
    athletic fee.

  • Participation Fees are not a guarantee of playing time on a team. This fee is not assessed if an athlete does not make the team. Playing time is based solely on the coach discretion and assessment of a student’s athletic ability and game situations.
